bio

Hi, I’m Riss Buie, and I’ve been baking professionally since 2013. I grew up here in Minnesota, moved away for a while—to Boston, then LA—and now I’m back for good, baking bread out of my home in Crystal, MN. It feels so good to be back in the Midwest, doing what I love.

My baking journey started in Boston, where I learned the art of croissants and pastries at a wonderful neighborhood spot called Canto 6. In LA, I dove into the world of recipe development at Buzzfeed Tasty, and it was there that I fell in love with sourdough. That love led me to Bub & Grandma’s, where I joined their talented bread team and deepened my skills.

Back in Minnesota, I baked at two incredible bakeries—Laune Bread and Baker’s Field Flour & Bread—before finally deciding to strike out on my own. Now, I’m baking my own bread to share with you all, and it truly feels like a dream come true.

My wife Sora and I recently built a cozy bakery space in our basement, so I can bake to my heart’s content. It’s been such a labor of love, and I’m so excited to share what comes out of that little corner of our home with you!

When I’m not baking you can find me in the garden hanging out with Sora, our toddler Sylvan, family, friends and all the yard bunnies who like to munch on our garden vegetables.

why I bake

My true passion is feeding people. I love that bread brings people joy and brings people together. Sourdough bread featuring lots of local whole grains is my jam because I love the process: getting locally milled flour, watching my starter grow, mixing, shaping, baking and sharing. Oh, and eating!

behind the name

The name bakerbuie is a little tribute to my roots. My mom’s maiden name is Baker, and my dad’s family name is Buie. I am a Baker and a Buie, thus I am bakerbuie.

Thanks for being here—I can’t wait to bake for you!
